In these times of massive interdependence, economic disruption, technological transformation, and globalization, traditional tools and techniques often magnify or mask problems rather than solving them. Coping with Chaos: Seven Simple Tools is a down-to-earth, practical introduction to human systems dynamics—where complexity science meets organizational practice. These simple ideas are far from simplistic! You can use insights from Coping with Chaos to:

It’s well known that these covert processes—such as hidden agendas, blind spots, office politics, tacit assumptions, secret hopes, wishes and fears—frequently sabotage change efforts, but up until now nobody has offered a rigorous, consistent way of identifying and dealing with them.

<p>Drawing on over thirty years of experience as an organizational change consultant to global corporations and government agencies, Robert J. Marshak shows precisely how to bring these hidden processes to light and deal with their negative impact.</td><tr></table>

Leaders from organizations such as Microsoft, Lands' End, Verizon, the U.S. Air Force, and World Vision demonstrate the strong positive influence stories can have.

<p>No abstract theories or platitudes are conveyed here. The book spells out how Kevin Roberts, CEO worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi, achieved sustained sales growth after several mergers and downsizings caused the organization to fall on hard times. It also shows how Erik Shaw, president and CEO of FivePoint Federal Credit Union, overcame resistance to an organizational name change, resulting in membership growth exceeding the national average.

Working with twelve specific "chambers" of abundance, readers learn to focus their passion and desire to create immediate changes in their lives.</td><tr></table>

But business? Most people think of business and poetry as separate and incompatible areas of life. In 1991 Alan Farnham expressed this common belief when he wrote in "Fortune" magazine, "Not many people in business feel an urge to write verse about their work". Challenged by this statement, Ralph Windle began a three-year search for poetry of business life - and found a profusion of verse exploring all aspects of business. The author's research revealed that not only is there a large body of business poetry in existence today, but business has been the subject of poems since the invention of the written word. Included are the works of more than 70 poets, and twice that many pieces. Many contemporary business people write verse about their experiences - serious and humorous - as they seek an outlet for their creativity, sending signals to the world that human sensitivities are highly compatible with effective business performance. Humour, insight, sadness, wisdom, and occasional anger are all represented in this collecion and offer a dynamic, living picture to all people in organizations, their families and the wider professions as well. <p>Appreciative intelligence provides a new answer to what enables successful people to dream up their extraordinary and innovative ideas; why employees, partners, colleagues, investors, and other stakeholders join them on the path to their goals, and how they achieve these goals despite obstacles and challenges. It is not simple optimism. People with appreciative intelligence are realistic and action-oriented—they have the ability to not just identify positive potential but to devise a course of action to take advantage of it.</td><tr></table>
